SVP and Salvation Army join forces to bring cheer to disadvantage families across NI

The annual Joint Family Appeal, sponsored by the BBC was launched at Belfast City Hall on Monday 29th November 2004 by Lord Mayor Tom Eakin.

Speaking at the launch Aileen Coney, northern administrator of the Society said, "Working with families 365 days of the year we see for ourselves the hardships and pressures many of them endure. It is a privilege and a pleasure for our charities to work together with the public and help families in need at this time of the year".

Music was played by the Salvation Army band and children from Holy Family P.S, Newington sang Christmas Carols, while Santa was on hand to cheer everyone up.

Major Rik Pears, divisional commander of the Salvation Army, said "In the past we have received thousands of beautiful gifts purchased by members of the public for an unknown child. That act of generosity speaks volumes to us and we are so grateful to everyone who play a part in making this year's appeal a success".

Belfast Rotary Club helped start the appeal off with a collection of gifts from their members at Belfast Europa at lunchtime.

It is anticipated that toys and gifts collected will again be distributed to almost 4,000 families, helping 11,000 children across the province as a result of the initiative.

All gifts should be new, safe, non-perishable and unwrapped and suitable for all ages from babies to teenagers.

A family gift will also be very welcome, a game, a tin of biscuits; something that would encourage the family to be closer, would be very much appreciated.
