A
cheque for £71,821.20 was presented to Trócaire
President Archbishop Sean Brady outside Armagh Cathedral
for victims of the tsunami. The monies are being donated
from recent collections held by SVP and will help to fund
Trócaire's work in the affected regions.
Trócaire has extended its sincere thanks to Larry McArdle (SVP Reg. President), his volunteers and all those who contributed for their hard work and outstanding generosity.
Trócaire's director Mr Justice Kilcullen thanked the Society for organising the collection: "This disaster seems to have made a huge impression with the people of Ireland and they have shown solidarity towards the people of Asia. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to all those who made donations to the St Vincent de Paul appeal and our general Asia Disaster Appeal and assure them that their money will reach those most in need."
Mr Kilcullen continued: "For Trócaire, the priority is to get this right from the beginning. Involving local architects and planners that are sympathetic to social housing will be critical in ensuring that the new settlements that emerge out of the wreckage of the tsunami will be a basis for a new life of hope for those who survived."
