North Belfast conference raises £1,410 packing groceries in newly opened Marks & Spencer store in Newtownabbey.

Ten members of the Newington branch were invited by the Manager of the M&S Store at the Abbeycentre (Maureen Hale) to help pack customer groceries at the food hall checkouts recently.

The volunteers beavered away from 10am to 4pm filling hundreds of bags of groceries. Generous customers donated a total of £575 into their collection boxes.

Thanking Marks & Spencer, conference president Martin Salmon said -

"We are sincerely thankful to the Manager and staff for all their kind assistance; letting us use their facilities and staff canteen. The money raised here today will go directly to assisting people in need in our parish, especially since our church is being re-built and funding has dried-up".

So impressed were M&S management that the 'Team of Packers" were invited the following week-end to the Food Hall checkouts at the main Marks & Spencer store in Belfast's city centre on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th October 2006. A relay team of sixteen volunteers packed hundreds more bags for customers.

Of the £1,670 collected during the day, this was split equally between the SVP and the Ian Botham Leukaemia Appeal.

A good day's work for two deserving causes.
