To
help alleviate this situation SVP has sourced this tea from
smallholders operating under the direction of Peermade Development
Society in Kerala who are processing their tea for themselves
in the Sahyadri Organic Tea Factory.
Their
are 1,000 local smallholders involved in this project, processing
and marketing their own organic tea and selling it at fair
prices that allow them to support their families.

As
part of its international works the Society of St Vincent
de Paul has gone into partnership with the small farmers of
Kerala, India, and is now offering totally organic, fair trade
tea for sale.
Since
the 1990's the price of tea has dropped and has been kept
down by the large tea companies. In Kerala nineteen plantations
have closed leaving 25,000 workers and their families on the
brink of starvation. For those still in work there are wage
cuts, job insecurity, worsening living conditions and rising
malnutrition. Small holders struggle to earn sufficient income
to survive.
