Latest
figures reveal that money spent alleviating poverty
by the Society of St Vincent de Paul in Northern Ireland
has increased by over £300k in one year. This
represents a massive 15% increase on the previous year's
figures.
The
greatest increase was in helping people with
fuel bills such as oil and gas. Spending here
increased from £220k in 2004 to almost £350k last year.
That's a rise of almost 60%; and looks set to get worse
as more and more price rises are announced.
As
you can see from this graph, the amount of money spent
helping people in need over the last 20 years has risen
quite dramatically even taking into account inflation
and cost of living increases.
