Donegal man wins first 'Jackpot' in St Vincent de Paul, Strabane and district members' "Lucky Lotto" monthly draw.

Mr Patsy O'Hagan from, Ballindrait, Lifford, Co Donegal received a cheque totalling £2,000 on Sunday 6th May 2007 from Brian Houston of St Mary's SVP in Melmount after the monthly draw at Melmount Parish Bingo.

The innovative fundraiser is the brainchild of local SVP stalwarts Raymonde McDaid and Martin Brolly, who started the draw back in July 2006 in an effort to raise much needed funds for the area.

Over the last eighteen months Strabane has been hit with several factory closures, the most recent of which was at the Adria plant where 1,200 local people lost their jobs. The knock on effects of unemployment, have led to unprecedented demands on the Society's resources.

Society volunteers carry out an average of 170 visits weekly to families and people in need. Last year alone the five SVP branches in the Strabane area spent almost £75,000 on the relief of poverty, such as cash assistance, food, clothing, furniture, fuel and holidays.
