A breakfast club for children operates in the Turf Lodge area of West Belfast. The club is not school and all children are assured a full stomach when they start their lessons. The children talk more openly with the volunteers than they would to a teacher.

Over 250 breakfasts a week are served to 5-8 year olds before they attend nearby schools.

The local schools have noticed the change – academic performance has improved as a result of the children being better fed and class attendance and punctuality has improved.

It also provides a mechanism whereby early social problems can be identified and corrected before they become uncontrollable such as communication skills, eating disorders, bullying, petty crimeetc.
