Twinning is where SVP councils and conferences in more affluent countries reach out to help our brother and sister Vincentians in less affluent countries with their work. Twinning is the hallmark of our Society and is a practical form of our Christian solidarity. In Mark 12: 41-44 Jesus tells his disciples to observe the poor widow"they give from their surplus wealth, she gave from her want...." In Twinning, Vincentians strive to give selflessly, not just from our surplus funds, but also from our want. The Society in Ireland is linked with 13 African countries. Twinning allows us to build bridges with our brother and sister Vincentians in Africa in order that we may take up the challenges that face our world in 2004. Aims of Twinning 1. To help councils and conferences communicate in a spirit of understanding and friendship. 2. To help developing councils and conferences in the fight against hunger, poverty and injustice. 3. To promote the growth of new councils and conferences

"Extreme poverty is a source of violence, bitterness and scandal, and to eradicate it is to do the work of justice and therefore the work of peace". Pope John Paul 11, 1998

"It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish ". Mother Teresa

"The question which is agitating the world today is a social one. It is a struggle between those who have nothing and those who have too much. It is a violent clash of opulence and poverty which is shaking the ground under our feet. Our duty as Christians is to throw ourselves between these two camps in order to accomplish by love what justice alone cannot do ". Frédéric Ozanam, 1834

PovertyOne sixth or more of our human family lives in poverty. It is inconceivable that there should be some 800 million people going hungry in a world that has the resources to provide for that most basic of all human needs. Little has changed since Frédéric Ozanam began his mission 170 years ago. He was struck and appalled by a world of such wealth alongside such poverty and such available resources alongside such deprivation.
Chikwawa, in southern Malawi has suffered from drought over the last two years causing extreme food shortages and hunger for the people. In one village called Pende which had 82 families, there was little food left and families were surviving on less than one meal a day. Click to enlarge
Veronica is from Pende and has 7 children. The hunger in her area was affecting her family but now she has access to a communal garden that grows vegetables. She also received seeds and tools to help her with the work. In the past she was too reliant on one crop. She now realises that learning how to vary the crops she grows is important, as her family will not be devastated again if the rains fail. A little goes a long way- £1.30 can provide a bowl of porridge everyday for a month in Zimbabwe where the affects of the drought are complicated by political and economic difficulties.
- £3.50 can provide a basket of cereals and vegetables for a month for a person living with HIV/AIDS in Zambia.
- £20 can buy 2 goats in Zimbabwe and a cheap source of milk and meat.
- £24 can buy hanging scales used for measuring weight gain in babies.
- £66 can provide a Treadle Water Pump in Malawi to help farmers feed their crops.
| You can make a differenceThe world we share is no different today. In the 47 "least developed" countries of the world, mainly in Africa, 10% of the world's population subsists on less than a half of a percent of the world's income. Some 40,000 people die from hunger-related causes every day. Click to enlargeTwinning is about help, that is spiritual, moral and material. Every SVP council and conference can get involved. In the past year the Society in Ireland has raised money for famine in Zambia, malawi and Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe your money set up an urban feeding programme, in Zambia - an emergency food programme for those threatened by famine, and in Malawi - your support helped farmers repair and replant their land after drought. HIV/AIDSEthiopia is home to many treasurers and majestic landscapes. It is the oldest independent country in Africa and one of the oldest in the world, with well over 2,000 years of recorded history. It is one of only two countries in Africa that has never been colonized. Ethiopia, with just one percent of the world's population, contributes nine percent of worldwide cases of HIV/AIDS. Almost 1.2 million people have died from the disease already and 750,000 children have been orphaned. | Enbaie is from Tigray in Ethiopia. She is just 23 years old and is one of those suffering with the disease. She is being helped by taking part in basket weaving so that she can provide some small sources of funding for herself.
